Provincial police say a wheel came off a Niagara bound pickup truck, just as it was approaching the skyway bridge.
Sergeant Kerry Schmidt with the horrible details that followed. "That wheel bounced into the Toronto bound lanes of the QEW, colliding with a Toronto bound vehicle with 2 occupants. The 53-year old male driver from the United States was pronounced deceased at the scene, the 52-year old male passenger was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries."
He says the wheel then bounced beyond the barrier into the city.
The QEW will stay closed in both directions for several hours. "We have a full closure in place... you will be forced off at Niagara Street, you can stay on there until Dunkirk to get back on the QEW, and go over the skyway. And, if you're going Toronto bound, you'll be forced off at Glendale."
