The union responds to government's offer to withdraw imposed contract
The Canadian Union of Public Employees has stated it will withdraw its walkout of 55,000 Ontario education workers as of tomorrow morning.
This is in response to Premier Doug Ford's promise to withdraw its contract imposed on education workers, as long as the union would withdraw its' walkout across the province.
During a press briefing, CUPE Ontario School Board Council of Unions President Laura Walton said the Premier agreed in writing to repeal the legislation.
“We have received and can confirm that the premier will introduce and support legislation that will repeal bill 28 in its entirety,” Walton said.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce released the following statement in response to the news:
"CUPE has agreed to withdraw their strike action and come back to the negotiating table. In return, at the earliest opportunity, we will revoke Bill 28 in its entirety and be at the table so that kids can return to the classroom after two difficult years. As we have always said and called for, kids need to be back in the classroom, where they belong.”
