He says infrastructure investment also needed for growing population
Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop says he'd like another term to keep momentum going on a solution to Douglas Memorial centre, and fighting amalgamation.
He adds infrastructure investments must continue as more people move to town. "At a fairly significant rate, 2.25 to 2.5% per year for the last 4-years. So, the population is now 37,000."
As for the new Niagara Region, he says St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland will have more voting power. "We suggested a system of weighted voting, where a majority, of at least 6 of the municipalities had to agree with a vote. Those 6 municipalities had to have a majority of the population."
He says his experience and knowledge of Fort Erie issues is needed.
"The province is essentially wanting to run, not just Niagara Region, but other regions in Ontario, and it takes the governance out of the hands of the people."
He adds investments by Fort Erie taxpayers for their community could be lost. "That will mean that money from Fort Erie taxpayers can be utilized to upgrade the infrastructure in other municipalities, that will become part of this amalgamated entity, because those municipalities haven't been making the types of investments that we've been making since 2012."
He is running for mayor against Tom Insinna, Juan Liu, and Mike Campbell.
