A new deal has been approved by the Niagara region for how waste is reduced and managed for the next 25-years.
Although the region still has roughly 30-40 years of landfill capacity, based on current population trends, planning needs significant lead time, that starts next year.
The region says roughly 2/3 of what goes in garbage cans should be recycled, so there are 23 ideas to support this, such as developing a food waste diversion program, and reviewing collecting contracts to improve affordability.
The region will also work at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing households using Green Bins, and improving the quality of waste management assets.
The region will review progress every 5-years.
