Its the start of a continental trade war in North America.
ONTARIO - The tariffs that were threatened by US President Donald Trump have become reality.
The 25 percent tariffs against Canada and Mexico took effect as of midnight last night. There's also a lower 10 percent levy on Canadian energy.
In a statement yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada would respond with its own 25 percent tariffs on $30 billion worth of American goods immediately, and plus another $125 billion worth of products 21 days later. He added the tariffs would remain in effect until the US drops its tariffs.
Premier Doug Ford also released a statement yesterday, saying Ontario is ready to follow through on its own retaliatory measures. This includes removing all American alcohol from LCBO stores, cutting off the electricity Ontario supplies the US, and eliminating a $100 million deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX. That deal provides internet to remote areas through the Starlink service.
Ford said a Buy Ontario legislation could also be introduced. He would like retail stores to clearly mark Canadian made products with a Canadian flag on the price tag.
