This will happen for the rest of this year, in an effort against President Trump and his policies
The Niagara region is suspending all trade show and conferences to the US for 2025, in an effort against President Donald Trump and his policies.
It was Councillor Rob Foster's idea, who said there is an economic tsunami coming at us.
Councillor Mat Siscoe applauded an exemption, advocacy trips to the US, in which they'll keep talking to American mayors. "And recognize that, to a person not one of them is in favour of the blanket 25% tariffs. In the conversations I've had, the mayors surrounding the Great Lakes are 100% opposed to this, and we need to keep having those conversations."
Savings from these trips will be used to support businesses suffering from the tariffs.
Councillor Haley Bateman added Trump's decisions have literally cost people their lives. "His abuse is not new, and should always be taken seriously. Sometimes I wish that we as a group would appreciate how his words have emboldened a very dangerous group of people, and worse, in attitude that is inflicting terror, is now being normalized."
The plan also excludes training seminars for regional staff in the US, if they can't be found in Canada.
