City of Niagara Falls is again dealing with rat problems in some neighbourhoods.
Councillor Lori Lococo noted they have the rodent rebate program, and that St. Catharines is also dealing with this problem.
GM of Municipal Works Erik Nickel says they've been debating the use of poison, especially near sewers. "What we're hoping to do is work with by-law enforcement, on prevention, as prevention is the best way to stop rats from entering into neighbourhoods, so making sure properties have met property standard requirements, so they're not feeding animals."
Another option is rat baiting stations in parks, to draw them away from residential areas.
Councillor Tony Baldinelli came across an idea years ago. "Two or three years ago I did some research on this, and in England they had the same type of problem, and there are some universities that had programs that provided bait in that they could not have anymore offspring."
He said that appeared to solve the problem in England.
