Police are ramping up efforts to keep distracted driving off the roads in Niagara.
Niagara Region Police are launching a 12-week initiative.
They are reminding drivers it's an offence to use a cell phone behind the wheel.
This includes using your phone while stopped at a light, or simply holding it in your hand while driving.
The first conviction will cost you between $600 and $1,000, three demerit points and a three-day license suspension.
A second conviction could be up to $2,000, six demerit points and a seven-day license suspension.
Police say distracting driving kills more people on Ontario's roads than impaired driving.
Distracting driving becomes even more dangerous in the winter months.
