Council voted to wait for potential provincial money on speed reduction measures first
The Town of Pelham is waiting to see what money the province comes up with for speed control, after a decision by Premier Doug Ford to get rid of speed cameras.
Councillors were mulling over a report on whether to keep the speed limit in certain areas, such as downtown, at 40kms, instead of 50.
Deputy Mayor Brian Eckhardt would like a consistent 40. "I've been driving 40 to 45kms an hour around town, every day, in whatever vehicle I've been driving. Not once did I get a honk of a horn, or a follow too close, and we moved along very well."
He also pointed to Highway 20 by E.L. Crossley school.
"I don't what someone at the region was thinking, but why they would increase it to 70kms an hour at Effingham Road, out past the school boggles the mind. Why would you not leave it at 50kms an hour until you're past the school."
Town staff suggested waiting for provincial money to be used on speed bumps, flashing lights and other speed control measures, instead of taking on the cost.
