Environment Canada expecting mid 40s with humidity this week, looks west for cause
In the words of an Environment Canada meteorologist... make sure your air conditioning is nicely oiled.
David Phillips is preparing the Niagara region a heat warning, as the humidity tops out at around 43 tomorrow.
But, he adds it's not just in this area. "From Welland to Wawa, from St. Catharines to Sioux Lookout, we're seeing incredibly warm temperatures. But, what is fascinating from meteorology point of view, is where the heat is coming from. Yes, it's American heat, but it's coming from Thunder Bay."
He's giving credit to rain leading to humidity enabling better growth of peaches and plums in Niagara.
As for where it's coming from, he points to Thunder Bay, the warmest place in Canada. "Some of the big, worst heat waves in Canadian history have really come from the Northwest, and down south. So, I guess in many ways Niagara Falls is the end of the pipeline, with regards to this heat, it comes up from the Dakotas, through the Prairies, through Ontario."
He warns that heat kills more people around the world than any other weather element.
