City asked to ban private use, after residents say they're kept awake at night, and property is damaged
City of Niagara Falls taking another look at its fireworks by-law, after being asked to ban them for private use.
A city resident told council last week he's fed up with the noise, and damage to his vehicles after finding empty fireworks shells. He also said he's been threatened when asking users to stop.
Councillor Lori Lococo noted people stopped reporting problems due to lack of consequences. "It just seems these last 2 years we've received a lot of phone calls, and I don't know what the right answer is, but I think it's a balance of education, it's a balance between working with different groups to let them know what our expectations are."
She adds she's been kept awake at 3am due to this problem.
Councillor Vince Kerrio noted the noise by-law needs reviewing. "I know we looked at some other things, in the park years ago, and they're very expensive.... drone shows and things like that. Fireworks is good, but that's getting a bit tiring. If we could come up with some new things, I think we'd be on the leading edge of new ideas."
Council was told people using fireworks also leave garbage in neighbourhoods.
