Provincial government spending over $11-million in Niagara sports facilities
The Niagara region is receiving $11.1-million from the province to upgrade sports facilities in Niagara Falls, Welland and St. Catharines.
Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden was in Niagara Falls this morning, announcing $420,000 to upgrade heating and cooling units for YMCA of Niagara and almost $700,000 to refurbish the Niagara Olympic Club. "Last, but certainly not least, we're investing $10-million to help modernize the Chippawa Willoughby Memorial arena that is right behind me. These are places where young people develop their skills in sport, and practically become coaches."
Mayor Jim Diodati added city council is looking at an NHL sized rink, 7-changerooms, more spectator seating, and a library.
"That off to the side, we'll build an Olympic sized arena, with a library. We're going to have a gym, where we get multi sports, pickleball, volleyball, hockey... with a turf, we'll get baseball, and a number of other sport."
