Mayor Clarifies Governance Model Thoughts

Frank Campion is open to exploring more than just 4-city model

Clarification from Welland's Mayor on why he was partial to a 4-city model for Niagara governance reform.

Frank Campion told his city council this week he was asked by former Chair Bob Gale what model he preferred, and it was a narrow question.  "Would you like one city or four cities?  My response was 'I don't have a problem with 12 cities'.  The question came back 'That's not the question I asked: Do you want 4 cities or one?'  I said 'I want 4 cities'."

The mayor also says he did not see any reports backing a 4-city model, but based this on his preference.

He saw pros and cons to each idea.  "One city is much easier to lose your identity as a lower area municipality, because you're going to be one city at that point.  But, I think as a practical model, a one city model is more efficient and effective."

The mayors adds this decision was not based on data, but his preference, and did not include amalgamation.

Prior to this meeting, the Ontario government announced it was pushing for an unelected Niagara Regional Chair, and 12 mayors.  This is part of legislation that has to pass the Ontario legislature, but likely will due to the Conservative majority.
