Niagara Falls fire department says it was the old Empire building, no injuries reported
Niagara Falls fire department getting a New Year's Day call for a fire at the corner of Park and Erie Streets.
Deputy Chief Ken Henry says they arrived at the old Empire building, finding flames coming from the abandoned building.
They arrived last evening after 8. "They worked through the night, to put out the hotspots, that were still underneath some collapsed pieces of the structure inside. They're on scene now, trying to determine the cause of the fire."
He adds there were no injuries.
He also says they undertook a defensive attack on the fire. "Because it was abandoned, and the state of the building, we decided that we wouldn't risk anything to go inside to do any fire suppression activities on the inside."
He doesn't believe at this point there were any homeless people within.
The Royal Bank and OPP were in the building over the years.
