Welland Fire Department trying since 2021 to get compliance, acting fire chief says it lacked fire suppression material between walls
$287,500 in fines, fire code violations and charges against the owner of a residential building in Welland, on Hellems Avenue.
Acting Fire Chief Matt Richardson says they've been trying to get the owner to comply since 2021, since then damage found on the fire alarm system, damage to fire doors, and combustible materials in exits.
He tells us what the Fire Marshall is considering. "Due to the totality of the circumstances, and how complex the whole situation was, because there are so many moving parts, that they would use that for potentially training purposes."
An Immediate Threat to Life notice was issued, and the building closed, leaving tenants without a home, but the community has worked to support those people.
