Union waiting to hear government's response to counter-offer
The back and forth continues today between the union representing Ontario education workers and the province.
Negotiators for the Canadian Union of Public Employees are back at the bargaining table this morning, waiting to hear the government's response to its counter-offer made late last night.
The government has tabled legislation imposing contracts and banning a strike, but the union insists without a deal they will walk out on Friday anyway.
CUPE has not said what is in its counter-offer. It's asking for annual raises of about 11.7%, while the government is proposing raises of 2.5 percent a year for those making less than $43,000 a year, and 1.5% for everyone else.
locally, the District School board and the Catholic board have both stated they'll close schools Friday if there is a strike, saying they cannot guarantee a safe environment.
The Catholic board adds day care will close, but the District board says day cares can open if they choose.
